should i pull the carpet up?

Here at Voyageur Flooring we receive a lot of questions via email. I received a popular question this morning that I thought I would answer publicly with the hope that it would help some other Minneapolis/St. Paul homeowners who are contemplating refinishing their hardwood flooring.

The quesiton is: I know that I have hardwood floors underneath the carpet, should I pull up the carpet? The answer is: it doesn’t matter to us! We can easily get an idea as to what’s underneath the carpet simply by pulling back the corner and based on the dimension of the room, provide an accurate estimate. If you want to pull it up yourself, go ahead! If you don’t, we’ll gladly pull it up for you and even dispose of the carpet on your behalf.

Finding hardwood floors underneath carpet is a great surprise! I always wonder why someone would cover hardwood floors, I digress…

When should I refinish my hardwood floors?

The four most common reasons to refinish the hardwood floors in your home:

2. Spruce up a home you just purchased: prior to moving in all of your belongings, refinishing your hardwood floors can be easily done in an empty house. Living in a home that is being worked on can be a pain so it’s a good idea to accomplish as much as possible while the home is empty.

3. Your hardwood floors haven’t been refinished in 7-10 years: homeowners often procrastinate the refinishing of their hardwood floors. If you occupy the home, moving furniture and getting ready for a company to refinish your hardwood floors can be a chore. 4. Removing of carpet: if you live in an older home and have rooms that have old carpet, there’s a good chance that hardwood flooring lies beneath your old carpet. Removing the old carpet is a great time to refinish your hardwood floors. Belongings and other objects have already been removed from the room and the hardwood floor probably will have dirt, scuff marks, tack marks from the carpet and other left over remnants from the carpet that need to be cleaned – this is a perfect chance to refinish your hardwood floors.

How Long Does Hardwood Floor Refinishing Take? Voyageur Flooring FAQ…

Often times we at Voyageur Flooring here the question: how long does hardwood floor refinishing take? Although every hardwood floor is different, hardwood floor refinishing usually takes 2-3 days. Our goal at Voyageur Flooring is to sand the hardwood floor on day one. Upon completion of hardwood floor sanding, Voyageur Flooring then thoroughly cleans the hardwood floor by vacuuming the hardwood floor. Once the hardwood floor surface has been cleaned, Voyageur Flooring will apply one coat of water based polyurethane. That usually concludes day one. Day two Voyageur Flooring buffs the hardwood floor and applies another coat of water based polyurethane to the hardwood floor. This step is repeated by the end of the second day. In some cases with older Minneapolis/St. Paul homes, the hardwood floor needs extra sanding or perhaps repair and in these cases its not uncommon to have the process take three days.
